How can programming contribute to nature conservation?
Students of Zagreb’s IX Gymnasium discovered the answer to this question during the workshop “Coding for Nature Conservation”, held on May 18 by Engineer of the Year 2024, Lada Kovjanić, at the invitation of Profil Klett, the regional hub for the EU Code Week initiative.
During the workshop, students learned the basics of HTML and CSS and created their own websites dedicated to animal species found in Croatia. In doing so, they combined the development of digital skills with the important goal of promoting nature conservation and raising awareness about the rich biodiversity that surrounds us.
The students’ projects will soon be published on cro.eco, a platform created by Lada Kovjanić. The workshop was organized as part of the Girls in Digital and Careers in Digital campaigns, which aim to introduce students to STEM careers and inspire their interest in digital and technology-related professions, with a particular focus on encouraging girls to pursue opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
We would like to thank Lada Kovjanić, the students, and their teacher Ana Logarušić from IX Gymnasium for their participation, enthusiasm, and contribution to this inspiring initiative, which demonstrates how technology can be a powerful tool for education and nature conservation.
