Atollo – An Innovative Project Focused on Inclusive Education

The Atollo project emerged from the creative team of the Division for the Modernization of Education and Training within the company Profil Klett. From the initial idea to full implementation, we have carefully followed every step of this innovative approach to improving education for children with special educational needs and learning or developmental difficulties.

The initiative arose from direct contact with teachers and principals of educational centers in Croatia, particularly through cooperation with the School for Education and Training in Pula. This collaboration marked the beginning of the first project activities. Today, two years after the initial idea, we can confidently say that we are on the right track to providing teachers, parents, and children with concrete support and simplifying the daily educational process.

The project brings together experts from various fields: education, educational rehabilitation, information technology, content development, representatives of agencies for inclusive education, and partners from small, medium, and large enterprises.

During the first year, a strong foundation was established for all subsequent activities. After comparing the national curricula of the partner countries (Australia, Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Ireland, Iceland, Norway, and Germany), a joint curriculum was developed, based on which digital educational materials were created.

Through a public call, 14 authors were selected to develop 45 digital teaching units in four levels of complexity in mathematics and computer science for children with developmental difficulties, following the defined guidelines and curriculum.

The materials are primarily intended for teachers as an additional educational tool, but they can also be used independently by students or together with their parents.

A comprehensive pilot project was carried out in 15 schools and centers across Croatia and Europe. Currently, the evaluation phase is underway, analyzing feedback from teachers who used the materials on the IZZI platform in their daily work with students between April and July this year. Project partners are now reviewing and refining the materials to ensure improvements are incorporated into the final versions.

Last week, on September 30 and October 1, 2025, a meeting of the entire Atollo project consortium was held in the beautiful Irish town of Westport. During a series of thematic sessions, partners exchanged experiences from the pilot program’s implementation and discussed the sustainability and further development of the Atollo handbook and toolkit, which will be made available to teachers and parents next year.

More information about the project is available on the website www.atolloproject.eu, where you can also subscribe to the newsletter to be among the first to access new materials.
